How to connect wireless headphones to the TV

After having faced an endless day of work, you decided to make yourself comfortable in front of the TV and enjoy the TV series that you wanted to watch for some time. The problem is that your schedules are quite particular, so listening to the TV at an acceptable volume could instead disturb those who take advantage of those hours just to rest.

That is why you are thinking of relying on a pair of wireless headphones to be connected directly to the TV: in this way, you have the chance to watch everything you want and, at the same time, those close to you can take advantage of it to rest without being disturbed from voices and sounds. The problem is that you have no idea how to connect wireless headphones to the TV, so you are looking for a tutorial that can explain how to do it in the simplest way possible.

Well, I am very happy to inform you that you have found what you are looking for: in the following lines, I intend to explain you by wire and by sign how to make the connection between the wireless headphones and the TV in your possession.

I will explain to you how to proceed, either using the so-called RF, or radiofrequency headphones, or using the most common Bluetooth headphones. So, don’t hesitate any longer and read very carefully everything I have to explain to you on this subject: you’ll see. It will be a pleasure to look at everything you want with the awareness of not disturbing anyone!

Preliminary information

Before going ahead and understanding how to connect wireless headphones to the TV, let me give you some additional information about the technologies that these devices could take.

First of all, the categories of wireless headphones most used for televisions are mainly two: radio-frequency transmission headphones (RF) and Bluetooth headphones. The first ones, almost always sold with a special transmitter to be connected to the 3.5 mm jack of the TV (the one usually dedicated to wired headphones), offer a range of up to 100 meters and an overall good-quality audio.

Bluetooth headsets, on the other hand, offer a much smaller range (usually around 10 meters) and compress audio from the external source. It must be said that the more advanced models offer a really good audio quality despite the applied compression and that, at least as far as televisions with Bluetooth compatibility are concerned, this type of headphones can be connected without resorting to external devices (and also used on devices such as computers, smartphones and tablets).

Moreover, as you will discover later, it is possible to use the aforementioned headphones also on televisions that natively are not equipped with the Bluetooth chip, thanks to the special transmitters to be connected to the 3.5 mm jack.

If you have not yet taken steps to purchase the wireless headphones to use with your TV, first check if the latter is equipped with integrated Bluetooth and if it is not, make sure you have a 3.5 mm jack to connect via a transmitter RF or Bluetooth (in the latter case, it is sufficient to have only the RCA inputs, ie the ” inputs ” colored in white and yellow).

Finally, I advise you to read carefully my specific focus on wireless headphones: there you will find many other parameters to keep in mind when choosing, so that you can make the purchase best suited to your case. Alternatively, if you have already chosen to buy a pair of headphones produced by Sony, Bose or Sennheiser, but you really don’t know which model to choose, I invite you to carefully consult my dedicated buying guides.

Connect headphones with RF transmitter to the TV

As for the headphones equipped with a radio-frequency transmitter (RF), the connection to the TV is rather simple and does not require any particular intervention. Unfortunately, I cannot be very detailed on the instructions to follow and on the position of the keys, switches and housings, as each model has its own configuration.

What I can do, is to show you the general procedure to be performed, valid for the vast majority of headphones in circulation: first, insert the battery in one of the two speakers (usually the one on the left), connect the charging base of the headphones to the electric current and position the latter on it, so as to be able to start the first charge cycle.

Note : some models of headphones include charging through a cable connected to the RF transmitter. In this case, you must connect the transmitter to the power socket and then insert the charging cable in the appropriate slot on the speaker that contains the battery.

Once the reloading phase is complete, place both the headphones and the transmitter on the same channel, using the lever located on both devices; finally, connect the transmitter to the TV via the supplied 3.5 mm jack (connecting it, if necessary, also to the mains supply), turn on the headphones, set the volume to little more than the minimum (in order to avoid damage to the ears via too loud), turn on the TV and check that everything is working properly.

In case of missing sound, poorly cleaned sound or interference, please change the reception channel both on the headphones and on the transmitter, using the appropriate levers, to then verify the actual improvement of the situation.

Connect Bluetooth headphones to the TV

Have you opted for a pair of Bluetooth headphones and now you want to understand how to connect them to the TV? Nothing could be simpler: if the latter is equipped with a Bluetooth chip, all you have to do is follow the ” classic ” pairing (or pairing) procedure provided by the TV operating system. Otherwise, you must first equip yourself with a special Bluetooth transmitter to connect to the 3.5 mm jack: below I am going to explain you both procedures.

Televisions with integrated Bluetooth

As for televisions with integrated Bluetooth, the pairing procedure does not last more than a few seconds. For example, if you have a TV with a WebOS operating system, take the remote control of the device, press and hold the โš™ button and, using the directional arrows, highlight the button (โ‹ฎ) (All settings) and press the OK button.

Once this is done, move to the Audio item, press the OK button, select the Bluetooth entry (eg LG Sound Sync / Bluetooth) and press the OK button again. Before going any further and activating the search for devices on the TV set the Bluetooth headphones in detection mode (or pairing): the procedure to do so may vary from headset to headset, so I advise you to consult the manual for the device in your possession if you don’t know how to do it; in general, it is sufficient to press and hold down some specific keys until the LED on the headset starts to flash, or the guide voice does not notify entry in pairing mode.

However, return to the TV and press the Select Device button, press the OK button again and, at this point, wait for the Bluetooth headphones to be detected and the name to be shown on the screen, select it from the list proposed and press the OK button on the remote control to finalize the connection.

If, on the other hand, you have Android TV available, the process is even simpler: scroll down the Home screen and select the Settings button, go to the Remote control and accessories section, choose Add Bluetooth accessory, set the headphones to pairing mode, wait for the relative name to be displayed on the screen and, after having selected it with the remote control, presses the OK button to complete the pairing procedure.

Unfortunately, I can’t give you even more detailed instructions on the Bluetooth activation procedure for all other TVs, as this may vary from device to device; in general, what you need to do is press the Menu button on the remote control, access the Sound options, then the Speaker Settings and, after setting the headphones in pairing mode, select the option for the List of Bluetooth headphones.

Televisions without integrated Bluetooth

As I mentioned to you at the beginning of this guide, if you have a TV without integrated Bluetooth, you can use some small external devices, Bluetooth transmitters, which allow you to connect your Bluetooth headphones to the TV anyway and enjoy a coverage range of approximately 10 meters.

You need to know that the transmitter is in charge of ” converting ” the audio signal coming out of the 3.5 mm jack into a Bluetooth signal, able to be received by the headphones and reproduced inside them.

You can buy a device of this kind also online, at a cost of less than $30,ย it is necessary to make an important clarification in this regard: not all devices of this type are equipped with the transmission mode, so be careful not to buy a device with only reception functionality, since it would be almost useless for the purpose.

Once in possession of the Bluetooth transmitter, connect one end of the cable to the 3.5 mm input to the receiver and insert the other end to the same input placed on the TV. Should the TV not be equipped with a 3.5 mm input, you can use the supplied jack / RCA adapter: instead of connecting it directly to the TV set, insert the 3.5 mm connector into the RCA adapter input and connect the connectors to the latter at the red input of the TV for the right audio and at the white input for the left audio (or for the mono).

Without this, activate the pairing mode of the headphones as I explained in the previous section, hold down the power button of the Bluetooth transmitter until the LED starts to flash and wait for the latter to automatically detect the headphones and finalize the connection.
